PWAtoApp vs PWABuilder: Paid Build Access or Free DIY Packaging?

November 7, 2026 · 6 min read

PWABuilder is the free, open-source choice in this comparison; PWAtoApp is a paid build-access service. PWABuilder helps package a suitable hosted PWA for app stores, using a Trusted Web Activity for Android and a generated Xcode project for iOS. You still compile and sign the iOS project with Apple’s tools. PWAtoApp costs €49.99 once for unlimited Android APK/AAB and iOS IPA builds with signing included, from compatible source you upload. Choose based on your PWA readiness, access to Mac tooling and willingness to handle compilation—not a claim that paid tooling is cheaper than free.

Who should use a free PWA packaging tool?

This guide is for owners deciding between a DIY PWA route and a dashboard that compiles prepared mobile projects. If your team can manage domain verification, Xcode and release signing, PWABuilder is a genuine option—not a deliberately weakened alternative. If you prefer submitting compatible source to a build service, the paid route may fit better.

The official PWABuilder tool and MIT license establish the free, open-source route. Free tooling does not mean free developer memberships, hosting or developer time. Equally, a €49.99 build package does not remove all technical work.

Android: check PWA readiness and domain verification

PWABuilder’s Android packaging uses a Trusted Web Activity. The website remains hosted and renders through a supporting browser. This differs from rewriting the app as native Android screens. Start with PWABuilder’s packaging documentation and the Chrome TWA overview.

For a verified full-screen TWA, your website must publish the appropriate Digital Asset Links statement. Match the application ID and signing certificate fingerprint, including the relevant Play app-signing identity for distributed builds. Our Digital Asset Links guide explains why a build may still show browser UI when that association is wrong.

iOS: a generated project is not a signed IPA

The official PWABuilder iOS project repository describes an Xcode project and a community-driven support model. You need a Mac with appropriate Xcode tooling to compile, configure signing and follow Apple’s distribution process. Do not treat downloading the project as downloading a ready-to-submit signed IPA.

PWAtoApp performs an IPA build from compatible source and supplied Apple signing material through an available Mac worker. You still need the correct Apple account, certificate, provisioning profile and app configuration. A signed IPA also needs the appropriate Apple upload and distribution workflow; it is not directly installable on every iPhone.

How the PWAtoApp build workflow actually works

PWAtoApp costs €49.99 once for unlimited Android and iOS builds, with release signing included. This is build-dashboard access, not an agency redesign or a promise of app-store acceptance. Personal Google Play support is an optional extra; Apple signing files and developer accounts are not included.

  • Prepare a compatible mobile source project and its ZIP. A website URL or an unchanged web export is not automatically buildable mobile source.
  • In the dashboard, choose Android or iOS. For Android, choose APK for device installation or AAB for Google Play. Each submission creates only the selected output.
  • Configure Android signing with an existing keystore or the create-keystore option. For iOS, provide your Apple Distribution .p12, its password and a matching provisioning profile; an available Mac worker is required.
  • Submit one build, follow progress and open live logs if needed. Wait for that build to finish before submitting another, then test the output before publishing.

Before buying, check your project against the mobile source and readiness checklist. Build access does not include preparing every incompatible project for you.

Example: an Android-first PWA with a later iOS release

1. Audit your existing PWA

Check HTTPS, manifest, icons, phone navigation and domain control. If you already have a suitable hosted PWA and can publish its domain association, PWABuilder’s Android route may be sufficient. Do not pay for compilation purely because free means poor quality; validate whether the route fits your app.

2. Decide who handles the iOS toolchain

If your team has Mac and Xcode experience, evaluate PWABuilder’s iOS project directly. If you prefer a build dashboard, first check that the source you prepare fits PWAtoApp and that you can provide Apple signing inputs. A paid build service is not a substitute for missing certificates or incompatible code.

3. Keep maintenance in the budget

Record keys, identifiers and version numbers, and reserve time for future platform requirements. Hosted content updates and binary updates are different tasks. Compare your team’s time and equipment costs separately from the tool price rather than inventing a universal savings figure.

What neither tool removes from your launch checklist

Your website and backend still need reliable hosting. Packaging does not turn server code into code that runs on a phone, repair broken login flows or rewrite web screens as fully native interfaces. Test the installed app’s sign-in, navigation, file handling and permissions on real devices.

Developer accounts, privacy disclosures, store listings and review remain separate responsibilities. Apple’s minimum-functionality guideline 4.2 matters for web-based apps; no converter can guarantee approval. Consult Google Play’s testing requirements for new personal accounts rather than assuming an AAB is immediately eligible for production.

Our Android and iOS launch plan explains the work after compilation. Use the PWA versus native app guide to decide whether packaging fits your product at all.

Checklist: when to choose each route

  • Choose PWABuilder when you have a suitable PWA, can manage website association and are comfortable following its platform packaging instructions.
  • For DIY iOS, confirm Mac access, Xcode skills, Apple signing and a plan for community-supported troubleshooting.
  • Choose PWAtoApp when you have compatible source and signing inputs and want repeat compilation through the build dashboard.
  • With either route, test authentication, permissions and navigation in installed apps before planning a public launch.

Is PWAtoApp cheaper than PWABuilder?

No: PWABuilder’s tooling is free. The reason to consider PWAtoApp is its paid build-and-signing workflow, not a lower tool price. Your total project cost depends on preparation, equipment and ongoing work. If you also want to compare paid platforms, see Despia’s pricing and workflow and Median’s licensing and annual fees.
